my grandmother knew which colors
to wear in spring and how to set a table.
my mother knew when to plant, to cut,
and how to sew a straight line. they tried
to teach me what they knew I needed to
know but somehow, in between us, the
years stretched so wide they seemed to
be speaking in tongues, folding messages
into every direction.
